In 1825, the Stockton & Darlington Railway made history as the world’s first modern railway, connecting places, people, and ideas in a way that would ultimately transform the world. Now, 200 years later, we stand on the threshold of an extraordinary anniversary – Railway 200.
Starting in January 2025, Railway 200 will be a year-long, nationwide campaign celebrating two centuries of railway history and its lasting impact. This initiative, led by a broad partnership of rail and heritage organizations, will highlight not only the railway’s remarkable past but also its role in today’s society and its importance for a sustainable future.
A Global Legacy – and Fedecrail’s Role
Although rail was born in Britain, its influence quickly spread worldwide, shaping infrastructure, industry, and communities across Europe and beyond. As the European Federation of Museum and Tourist Railways, FEDECRAIL and its members play a crucial role in preserving and showcasing this heritage. Through historic railways, trams, and rolling stock, we connect today’s audiences with the pioneering spirit of the past.
Join Us in the Celebrations
Railway 200 is an opportunity for all of us to engage with a broader audience, share our passion for railway heritage, and inspire future generations. Events, exhibitions, and initiatives across Europe will celebrate this milestone, and Fedecrail encourages all members to take part.
Stay tuned for more details on how Fedecrail and our member organizations will contribute to this historic occasion. Together, let’s honor 200 years of railway history and look forward to an exciting future for our heritage railways!
