Youth Upskill Programme

FEDECRAIL’s International Youth Accreditation

About the Youth Upskill Programme (YUP)

The Youth Upskill Programme (YUP) is a new FEDECRAIL initiative designed to strengthen the youth engagement efforts of our member organisations across Europe. The programme’s dual objective is to develop the skills of existing young volunteers and, subsequently, attract new talent to the heritage railway sector.

By introducing a standardised accreditation recognised across Europe, the FEDECRAIL Youth Upskill Programme directly supports young people’s work-readiness. This is achieved through structured skill development and verified, hands-on work experience that enhances their CVs.

Participating FEDECRAIL member associations benefit from increased organisational capacity as Young Volunteers complete accredited, verified work within the programme’s framework.

Programme Structure

The Youth Upskill Programme is a progressive, three-tier pathway hosted by FEDECRAIL member organisations throughout the continent:

  • Bronze: 50 Verified Hours (Introduction to the Sector)
  • Silver: 200 Verified Hours (International Networking & Youth Exchange) – To be introduced
  • Gold: 500 Verified Hours (Leadership & Mentorship) – To be introduced

Through mentorship, dedicated training, and practical work, Young Volunteers will acquire real work experience across various key areas of the sector, including:

  • Operations (e.g., Driving)
  • Engineering (e.g. Workshop)
  • Customer Service
  • Administration
  • Marketing

Upon successful completion of a programme level, all graduates receive an official FEDECRAIL accreditation, which boosts their professional profile. Participating organisations gain a sustainable pipeline of skilled and accredited volunteers.

Who Is Eligible?

  • Organisations: European heritage railway or tramway associations that are members of FEDECRAIL through their national umbrella organisations.
  • Young People: Individuals between the ages of 16 and 25 (for the pilot Bronze level). No prior experience is necessary.
