Pirates, Pumpkins and Autumn Fun at Leighton Buzzard Railway

Seasonal themed events have become an important way for heritage railways to welcome new visitors, encourage families to return, and show that historic railways can be lively, creative places to explore. At the Leighton Buzzard Railway, these events now form a key part of how the railway connects with its community — and this year’s late‑summer and autumn programme demonstrated that perfectly.

Over the August bank holiday weekend, the railway hosted a popular family event featuring a pirate attack. Armed with water pistols, visitors travelled on busy trains to Munday’s Hill, where a pirate ship lay in wait. Volunteers and passengers arrived in costume, adding to the fun and helping create a relaxed, good‑humoured atmosphere. The event was well received, and preparations are already being considered should the pirates return next year.

As autumn continues, the railway shifts from pirates to pumpkins. On Saturday 31 October, Halloween activities begin at both Page’s Park and Stonehenge, offering families a chance to enjoy the railway in a different seasonal setting. Stations will feature Halloween decorations, and volunteers will be dressed for the occasion. Visitors are warmly encouraged to join in — witches, wizards, ghouls and ghosts are all welcome.

These themed days do more than provide entertainment. They help heritage railways reach wider audiences, support local tourism, and show that historic railways can offer varied experiences throughout the year. By combining heritage with imaginative programming, railways like Leighton Buzzard continue to share their story with new generations while keeping long‑standing traditions alive.
