Global Light Rail Awards 2026 – Celebrating Innovation and Connecting Heritage with the Future

c

On 7 October, FEDECRAIL was represented at the Global Light Rail Awards, held at the historic Battersea Arts Centre in London. Often described as the Oscars of the light rail industry, this international event brings together professionals, organisations and industry leaders to celebrate excellence, innovation, safety and achievement across the tramway and light rail sector.

FEDECRAIL’s President, Mimmi Mickelsen, attended the ceremony and was nominated in several award categories. Although she did not take home an award this year, her nominations were a welcome recognition of her dedication to the sector and of the growing importance of strengthening the links between heritage tramways and modern light rail operations.

For FEDECRAIL, taking part in events such as the Global Light Rail Awards is about far more than celebrating success. It is an opportunity to engage directly with the modern light rail community, build relationships and explore new areas of cooperation that can benefit our member organisations across Europe.

Heritage tramways and modern light rail systems share not only a common history, but also many of the same challenges: safety, technical development, skills, and the preservation of specialist knowledge. By bringing these two worlds closer together, we can learn from one another and create new opportunities for the future.

Understanding where we come from helps us understand where we are going. FEDECRAIL will continue working to ensure that railway and tramway heritage remains connected to the wider rail industry — not only as a reminder of the past, but as an active part of its future.
